Each year the West Hartford Youth Field Hockey League sends out an annual scholarship opportunity for any West Hartford high school senior who has played field hockey and meets the scholarship requirements.

Leigh Kumpa, who founded the league and is its past president, and current president Cathy Callahan compile all the applications. The application requires submission of an essay with the athlete providing details about how they display sportsmanship, leadership, responsibility, and integrity on and off the field.

The applications, including the essays, are then reviewed by the scholarship committee members who vote to select the recipient.

This year’s winner, Hall High School senior Caitlin Striff-Cave, including the following in her essay: “Playing field hockey has helped me grow on and off the field, and I look forward to playing Club in college. I owe a big thank you to WHYFH and Hall’s program for fostering my love for the sport and for my teammates, and I’m incredibly grateful that I got to lead my team as a captain for my senior year.” – Caitlin

Kumpa and Callahan surprised Caitlin last week with her scholarship money and some balloons.
