Since Thursday is Christmas Day, we take a break from our regular “Thursday Throwback” and instead have “Wayback Wednesday” this week. We’ll do the same next week for New Year’s.
We have been trying to use seasonally appropriate images for this feature (note this week’s photo!), and last week we provided a hint that the building in the photo “was the type of place many of us may have visited, or will be visiting, recently.”
Although no one commented directly on the article, there were a few comments on Facebook. “The sign says Tea Room and it looks like an old home. I’ll be guessing it’s an Inn/restaurant/tavern,” suggested Lisa Petersen
Yisraela Ellyn Yehudit wrote: “A gift shop or post office?”
And while John Hardy’s guess that the building was “an early American iteration of Starbucks?” was a creative guess, it was not correct.
Yisraela wins the prize this week – the building in the photo, despite the sign that reads “Tea Room” (perhaps a later occupancy), was originally the West Hartford Post Office, located at 8 North Main St. The image that appeared last week was cropped so that text did not appear. Did anyone wait in line at the post office sometime in the past few weeks?
This week’s image is obviously appropriate for the season. You probably don’t have to try to hard to figure out where it is. If you have memories of this scene, please share them.
In any case, Merry Christmas!!
Thank you to the Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society for providing us with the images. For more information about the organization, visit www.noahwebsterhouse.org.

I am writing this while looking at our own Christmas tree. Every year it returns in its resplendence, adorned by the memories of years past. Every year, it is a prettier sight as the memories become more numerous and richer. To all of my past, present and future friends, I wish you a wonderful holiday season (whichever holiday you prefer, of course) and a happy New Year. And Ronni, to you, Tom,Joy and all the staff at We-ha, best wishes in the new year and a thank you for your service to the community.
This looks like First Church on South Main Street.
