Lloyd H. Bugbee Elementary School is celebrating its fourth annual International Night on Thursday, February 25, 2016 from 6 – 8 p.m. The Bugbee family is excited to connect to their roots to foster cross-cultural understanding.

Bugbee’s International Night will be the most robust effort to date, with families coming together to share their unique traditions and gain a broader perspective on the world. More than 40 countries will be included, with new countries represented, such as: Albania, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Peru, and Pakistan. The cultural offerings include art, dress, music, an international talent show, unique sports activities, as well as an International Café featuring homemade food from around the world. Educational activities, such as a large-scale scavenger hunt, will help students to benefit from an interactive learning experience that goes beyond the classroom.

According to Principal Noam Sturm, “As our world has become more divided, it has never been more important for students to have a clear understanding and acceptance of the customs of other cultures. Our annual International Night provides the opportunity for students to draw parallels between their own culture and those of their fellow Bugbee families. In addition, they will build knowledge and respect for others, while allowing all our students and families to connect to their roots!”

Each country will host an informational booth to inform students and families about fascinating facts from their respective cultures – including how to say “peace” in each of their native languages. “This is a special evening that celebrates the spirit of friendship and solidarity,” says Dahlia Cherny, International Night organizer and 4th Grade teacher. “Celebrating differences and similarities, the students and their families get to experience a peaceful and better world through education and the creation of mutual understanding.”

Bugbee International Night is open to all Bugbee families and will begin at 6 p.m. at various locations within the school, located at 1943 Asylum Ave. in West Hartford. For more information, please contact Rose Balesano at 860-929-5500.
