On Thursday, April 13 the Art Museum at University of Saint Joseph will host a celebration of its outdoor sculpture project, which has brought works by 10 contemporary artists to campus on long-term loan.
The sculptures, which have been chosen by the participating artists and guest curator Joan Hurwit, are distributed across the University’s Olmsted Brothers-designed campus.
All the featured sculptors have deep ties to Connecticut and are well known figures in New England and beyond. They include Joy Brown, Carol Kreeger Davidson, Joe Gitterman, David Hayes, Peter Kirkiles, Ann Mallory, Francis Patnaude, Justin Perlman, David Skora, and Jonathan Waters. Guest curator Joan Hurwit has organized previous presentations of work by these artists, including displays at Bushnell Plaza and the Connecticut Governor’s Mansion.
In addition to the works included in the sculpture project, the tour app will feature several sculptures on campus that belong to the collection of the Art Museum at University of Saint Joseph as well as a new piece by artist Judith Kruger, commissioned in conjunction with this year’s Earth Day events. It is anticipated that additional sculptures will be added to the outdoor display over the coming year.
The public is invited to visit campus and download the new sculpture tour app Otocast, which is free of charge and features audio of the sculptors discussing their work as well as links to additional information about the artists. In addition to the USJ sculpture project, Otocast provides access to over 250 guides and 4,000 points-of-interest, for locations across North America and beyond. It is available for free download from the iTunes and Google Play stores.
The celebration on April 13 will begin at 4 p.m. with the inauguration of the sculpture tour. Museum staff will be available in Coleman Lobby of Bruyette Athenaeum to assist visitors in accessing the tour app or to answer any questions. Then from 5-6 p.m. there will be a public reception at the Art Museum where visitors can meet the sculptors and the project’s guest curator.
