Jonathan’s Dream will launch the first Summer Intergenerational-literacy program, Bubba’s Book Bench, on Wednesday, June 13, 2018.
Ronit Shoham, Jonathan’s Dream project coordinator, approached Hebrew Center this winter to introduce the idea of older Hebrew Center community members reading to children in the pavilion of Jonathan’s Dream playground.
“Hebrew Center was very excited to partner with Jonathan’s Dream for such a meaningful program,” said Rebecca Sears, director of Community Relations at Hebrew Center for Health and Rehabilitation. “We are always looking for ways for our seniors to connect with the surrounding community, especially younger members of our community. These interactions have a powerful impact on the elderly. You can clearly see the effect of these moments in the broadened width of every smile.”
Jonathan’s Dream Mission is to create an environment where everybody can play together regardless of their abilities. A place where everybody can celebrate life.
“Seniors are members of our community and can continue to be meaningful participants, in fact they have wisdom and experiences to share. Having the Hebrew center so close to Jonathan’s Dream created a picture in my mind of a Hebrew Center member sitting in the pavilion surrounded by children listening to a story. Creating an opportunity for multi generational interaction farther our mission and vision of being inclusive to all,” Shoham said.
June’s selected reading will be “Grandfather’s Wrinkles” by Kathryn England. The event will take place at 10:30 a.m. at Jonathan’s Dream Playground on Abrahms Boulevard in West Hartford.
Hebrew Center will provide refreshments. Laws of Kashrut will be observed. Going forward, Bubba’s Book Bench will take place on the third Thursday of every month at 10:30 a.m. through September 2018 (July 19, Aug. 23 and Sept. 20).

“Bubba”? Isn’t that a Southern term?
Are you sure you don’t mean “Bubbe”? That’s Yiddish for “grandmother,” which seems more plausible.
I just double-checked and it is “Bubba’s”!
