Camp KO, a part of Kingswood Oxford School in West Hartford, has received a $25,000 Expansion Grant for Summer Enrichment programs through the Connecticut State Department. of Education. In a partnership with the West Hartford Public Schools, Camp KO will offer 45 one-week full scholarships this summer in academic and arts-focused programs to children entering grades 3-11 that attend West Hartford Public Schools.

Students who qualify must meet the following criteria:

  1. Student cannot afford a summer camp week ($495)
  2. Student has an excellent attendance record
  3. Student has an expressed interest in a program offered by Camp KO

If a parent or guardian feels that their student qualifies for a camp scholarship, they should contact their school officials (principal or school counselor) and let them know your student would like to be considered for this opportunity.

Summer camps, such as Camp KO, have a unique opportunity to provide a structured environment for children to develop social and emotional skills while remaining less formal than a traditional classroom. Camp KO scholarship winners will choose from more than 20 arts and academic programs, and in addition to the 4.5 hours of instruction they receive daily, each camp day includes a 45-minute fitness class, 30-minute yoga, and mindfulness class, lunch, and snack provided by the camp, time for free play, and a culminating event at the end of the week. Additionally, food insecurity has been a contributing factor to inequities in learning within underserved communities, so Camp KO will be able to provide healthy meals and snacks to those who are selected for scholarships.

Camp KO offers six sessions of camps (June 21-25, July 12-16, July 19-23, July 26-30, August 2-6, and August 9-13).  Scholarship programs are offered in the following arts and academic areas and campers also receive daily fitness and yoga classes. The student camp choices include: Broadway Dance, Electronic Music, Creative Non-Fiction Writing, Coding (Intro, Python, Java, and C#), ART – Printmaking, A Cappella Singing, Robotics (2-week program), Creative Writing, Wonders of Science, Graphic Design, ART – Paper Quilling, Rockband, 3D Design & Print (2-week program), Broadway Triple Threat, and Academic Prep (entering grades 3 and 8-9).
