Yom HaShoah 2025: community Holocaust memorial events are announced.

Submitted

For years, Holocaust survivors have carried the responsibility of remembrance, recounting their experiences so the world would not forget. But now, 80 years after the liberation of Auschwitz, that responsibility is shifting. The era of firsthand Holocaust testimony is approaching its end. The question survivors have asked for years – who will tell our stories when we can’t? – is no longer theoretical. It’s real.

At the same time, antisemitism is rising at a pace many thought unimaginable in our lifetime. Hate speech is flooding social media, Holocaust denial and distortion are creeping into mainstream conversations, and violent attacks on Jewish communities are increasing worldwide. These troubling patterns show how quickly hate can spread when history’s warnings are ignored.

That is why remembrance is not just about the past – it is about the choices we make today. The Holocaust did not happen overnight; it was the result of countless choices made by individuals, from those who stood by in silence to those who took a stand. Choosing to learn, to listen, and to show up is how we ensure that history is not forgotten or rewritten. The opportunity to hear directly from a survivor, to stand beside them in commemoration, is slipping away. Attending a Yom HaShoah commemoration may seem like a small act, but it is a meaningful one. It is a choice to honor the past, to learn from history, and to take a stand against indifference.

Because if we don’t remember, who will?
