The Connecticut Republican Party nominated Beacon Falls First Selectman Gerry Smith to challenge U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy for his seat in November on Monday at the party’s convention at Central Connecticut State University.

Despite getting 68% of the votes in the four-way contest, Smith is likely facing a primary challenge from U.S. Navy Veteran Matt Corey, who got 29% of the vote to take second place and surpass the 15% minimum threshold required for a primary. If he goes through with it, the primary will take place Aug. 13.
