The Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society will hold its 11th annual Gingerbread House Workshops this December.

Gingerbread Day is an annual event for kids and adults alike to construct a creation from homemade gingerbread, fresh icing, and delicious candies. Adults are invited on Friday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. to a BYOB event, and on Saturday, Dec. 9, three family sessions will be offered at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m.

Adults, this holiday tradition is for you, too! Everyone over the age of 21 can enjoy the BYOB Gingerbread House Night. Bring your favorite beer or wine (we’ll provide the glasses), grab a seat, and build a tasty gingerbread house. The evening will feature light hors d’oeuvres, tiny decorative candies, and colored icing.

On Saturday, families can spend a kid-friendly day at one of three different sessions. Kids and adults alike can build a delightful (and delicious!) house from holiday-themed candies, white icing, and homemade cookies. The museum’s play area, Noah’s Discovery Learning Space, will be open during each session.

These workshops give families an opportunity to take part in one of America’s oldest traditions. Gingerbread recipes appear in the oldest American cookbooks. Ingredients like molasses, ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, sugar, and cloves were hard to come by in the colonial era. So difficult, in fact, that President John Adams remarked to a friend, “I know not why we should blush to confess that molasses was an essential ingredient in American independence. Many great events have proceeded from much smaller causes.”

At the Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society, we are celebrating over 10 years of building gingerbread houses together.

Visit noahwebster.yapsody.com for more information or to register. Pre-registration is required as space is limited. A maximum of two people may work on each house. BYOB Night house kits are $17 for museum members and $20 for non-members. Other sessions are $15 for museum members and $18 for non-members per house kit.

The museum would like to thank the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving and the Greater Hartford Arts Council for their continued support.

The Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society is a cultural destination where citizens can learn to understand and appreciate the past. The museum preserves the birthplace of Noah Webster, the founding father, educator, author, and lexicographer who taught generations of Americans what it means to be American. This National Historic Landmark is also a repository for West Hartford history, the community that molded Noah Webster’s future and is still thriving over 250 years later. The historic house and exhibit spaces are open daily 1 until 4 p.m. For information on the museum’s extensive school and public programs, please visit www.noahwebsterhouse.org or call 860-521-5362.
