Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the show goes on, and last week students from West Hartford’s Hall High School engaged in their annual participation in WGBY’s quiz show, “As Schools Match Wits.”

This year marks the 60th anniversary year for the quiz bowl competition – a battle of intelligence and quick thinking that takes place annually among high schools in western New England.

Categories include arts and entertainment, literature, math and science, general knowledge (including sports), social studies (including civics and geography, and world events (history as well as current events). “As Schools Match Wits,” which premiered in 1961, is the nation’s oldest high school quiz show.

Hall’s team featured three juniors – Sophie Kudler, Aaliska Sapkota, and Sophia Cornicello – with the team size this year reduced from four to three students. Kudler served as an alternate in last year’s competition.

The Hall team competed against Smith Academy of Hatfield, MA.

In an other COVID-related change to the format, for the first time in the history of the show, the students and host were not all in the same place. Host Beth Ward was in the studio alone, while the students were in two separate rooms.

The episode featuring Hall will air on April 17 at 7:30 on WGBY. Results of the competition are not released until the show is broadcast.

Hall’s team is coached by Latin teacher Jim Crabb and math teacher Christina Hunter.
