The Aid-A-Pet and Pets of the Homeless organizations give help to people who cannot afford to feed their pets. Locally, Aid-a-Pet was started when Lori Reardon, a nutritionist, noticed that her patients were buying pet food, instead of using the money for their own medications. She began Aid-a-Pet to distribute pet food to needy pets. They are now partnered with the national Pets of the Homeless organization to spread the word about this need. Both programs help many veterans.
“People don’t realize, or don’t like to admit, that there are homeless people and pets right here in West Hartford,” said Susan Brandon of Joe Cornfield’s. She brainstormed with Lori and decided to make Joe Cornfield’s a collection site for pet food donations. “People can buy extra food, or simply bring in the cat food their own cats don’t like,” said Susan. They are also collecting dog food and other pet products. Please contact the store for more information, 860-233-0070.
When Joe Cornfield himself passed away in 2008, Susan made a promise to Joe, that she would take care of his Yorkshire Terrier, Corky during the work day so as not to disrupt his routine. Corky had been accompanying Joe to work since he was a puppy, so Susan, and Jerry Reed (shown above with Corky), are happy to have Corky in their showroom to welcome customers.
