A fire that was reported at 11:04 p.m. Wednesday at a single-family home in West Hartford was quickly extinguished and no injuries to firefighters or civilians were reported, officials said.
According to West Hartford Fire Department Deputy Chief John Sokolowski, when the first unit arrived to the reported blaze at 22 Avondale Road, heavy smoke was visible from the roof line and gable end windows of the two-story home.
The incident was quickly declared a “working fire,” which led all five of West Hartford’s fire companies to respond to the scene. Other local fire departments provided mutual aid to cover the town while West Hartford units were engaged.
Residents of the home, who reported that the fire was in the attic, had been able to safely self-evacuate before firefighters arrived.
Firefighters attacked the blaze from the interior and confirmed, through a primary search, that no one else was in the home. A second line was stretched to the fire by additional companies, and crews performed an overhaul to ensure no extension into the rest of the attic space, Sokolowski said.
He said the fire was “knocked down within minutes,” and at 11:30 p.m. was officially declared under control.
While fire damage was contained to the attic, there was significant smoke damage throughout the rest of the home.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation by the West Hartford Fire Marshal’s Office.
