To the Editor:

West Hartford continues to be one of the most desirable communities in the nation, ranked 19th best place to live in the country and #1 in Connecticut by U.S. News & World Report. That kind of recognition doesn’t happen by accident. It’s the result of thoughtful, steady, and strategic leadership that is both fiscally responsible and deeply committed to the long-term health of our town.

Under the Democratic majority, West Hartford has made targeted investments in public safety, education, and infrastructure while maintaining one of the strongest credit ratings in the country. We have prioritized balanced growth, ensuring that redevelopment meets community needs and supports sustainability. The adaptive reuse of underutilized properties and the creation of new housing, both market-rate and affordable, have expanded the Grand List, strengthened our tax base, and reduced pressure on existing homeowners.

Republicans claim there has been “overdevelopment,” but for more than a decade, there was almost no investment in new housing after Blue Back Square. That created a pent-up demand for homes and apartments. The current approach, encouraging housing near existing infrastructure, transit lines, schools, and commercial centers, is innovative, environmentally responsible, and responsive to real market needs – this is the definition of smart growth.

Our leadership has also invested in road safety and infrastructure, securing millions in competitive state and federal grants. We are building safer streets through Vision Zero initiatives, improving walkability, and calming traffic. These are evidence-based strategies used in communities nationwide.

Fiscal responsibility doesn’t mean avoiding investment. It means investing wisely in ways that keep West Hartford strong today and in the future. The Democratic team has managed town finances prudently while continuing to deliver high-quality services: outstanding schools, strong public safety, robust senior and youth programs, and beautiful parks.

By contrast, the Republicans have offered no concrete plan to reduce costs or improve services. Without supporting Grand List growth, their approach would actually increase the tax burden on current residents. Should we cut public safety? Reduce teachers? Delay road repairs? Reduce library hours or senior center services?

But this shouldn’t come as a surprise. When a voter asked the West Hartford GOP, “Will you share how you differ from the Republicans running our federal government?” they responded, “Why would we differ from success?” West Hartford cannot afford to put a party in charge that views the current chaos of Washington, D.C., as a model of success.

The decisions made by the Trump administration have made it even more difficult for local governments to meet residents’ needs by undermining affordable housing initiatives, reducing support for public education, and limiting federal aid for critical infrastructure. These challenges require Democratic leadership to navigate these difficult times and ensure every member of our community continues to thrive.

West Hartford’s success is not the result of slogans or sound bites. It’s the result of careful planning, community engagement, and a commitment to fairness, fiscal prudence, and compassion. We should be proud of the direction our town is heading: inclusive, strategic, and built for lasting strength.

The future of West Hartford depends on your vote. Let’s continue the progress. Please vote for the Democratic team on Row A that has kept West Hartford strong, safe, and thriving!

Best,
Peter Andrews
Chair – West Hartford Democratic Town Committee
