To the Editor:
Town Councilors Barry Walters and Tiffani McGinnis are consummate examples of dedicated local leaders. Their strong council track record speaks for itself: from establishing Vision Zero for pedestrian safety, championing smart, affordable housing developments to combat rising costs, and steadfast support for our public schools, which are continually ranked amongst the highest in Connecticut.
What truly makes Barry and Tiffani special is not just what they accomplish, but how they lead. They listen, they show up, and they work to ensure every resident, regardless of background or circumstance, has a voice in shaping the future of our town. Their governing is rooted in compassion and a belief that government can be a force of good in residents’ everyday lives.
West Hartford is a growing and thriving community that other municipalities seek to emulate. This is no coincidence; it is a direct result of steady and thoughtful Democratic leadership. Yet no municipal government can operate in a bubble; having local leaders who can adapt to state and federal policy is crucial.
We are starting to see the effects of decisions made by the Trump Administration ripple into local communities like ours: cuts to essential programs that many West Hartford families rely upon, the cancellation of grants that municipalities have planned around, and attacks on public education. These decisions have and will continue to make life harder for seniors, working families, and young people trying to build their future here in West Hartford.
The West Hartford GOP has proudly supported the actions of the Trump Administration on social media, declaring them a “success” and seeing no reason to govern differently. No candidate from the Republican slate has come out to differ on this stance.
Meanwhile, the West Hartford Democrats have responded by actually governing, dealing with the damage these actions do to our community. Leaders like Barry and Tiffani have responded to the lack of SNAP funding this month, directing constituents to resources where they may find some relief. That is what local leadership and governing looks like.
As a 24-year-old, lifelong resident, and someone whose family has depended on many social programs now under attack, I feel the choice is clear regarding which candidates are serious and ready to lead our community into the future and continue our success in the present.
That’s why I am proud to support Town Councilors Barry Walters, Tiffani McGinnis, and the entire Democratic slate on Row A this election cycle. Together, they represent the values, empathy, and leadership that will keep West Hartford strong, compassionate, and forward-looking for years to come.
Sincerely,
Mario Volpe
Corresponding Secretary – West Hartford DTC

The lack of SNAP funding is solely because of the Democrats. 14 times they had a chance to re-open the government — turned it down every time. They were offered a separate bill on SNAP — nope didn’t want it. You write like somehow Trump or the national Republicans are shameful and that local GOP should be too. Why? Why does that matter . I am not asking local Dems to denounce Barack Hussein Obama, Joe Biden, Pelosi. If you want to align with these people, so be it. I am not trying to guilt you by association. If the shoe fits, wear it.
Barack Hussein Obama!!!
Without the racism and bigotry repubs have nothing.
SNAP food benefits for families in need are being within because (1)Trump will not release funds already appropriated and (2) the Repubican Congress does nothing but Trump’s bidding. Congress has had multiple opportunites to fix this with a bipartisan compromise but it’s politics before people.
And now how much true-believers like Mr. Beudreau deny it, the West Hartford Republican party is clearly on record about its willing complicity. As reported last week, when asked how they differ from Trump , the party’s spokeperson responded “Why would we?.”
If memory serves, Mr. Boudreau is the same gentleman who lamented a year ago that he and other Trump supporters were feeling ostracized in West Hartford. If you’re the type of person who says “Barack Hussein Obama,” and you live in a community like ours, you shouldn’t act surprised when people don’t want to do business with you or invite you to parties.
