To the Editor:
Now that the elections are over, my 15 years of service to the town will come to an end – 2 years on the Zoning Board of Appeals, 9 years on the Board of Education, 4 years on Town Council, the last two serving as your minority leader. Although I was committed to continuing to employ my advocacy, institutional knowledge and continue my passion to serve, the Republican Town Committee members thought differently and I was the only one left off the ballot for this year’s election. Although shocked by their decision, I quietly left the room thanking my few supporters. Being an old milk man, I wasn’t going to cry over spilled milk.
It’s paramount to me to reach out to the community, thanking the residents of West Hartford for all their support, encouragement, passion, and engagement to our town. You’re what makes this town tick and so vibrant. From talking to me at sporting events, the grocery store, our local restaurants, through emails and phone calls, I appreciated all the interactions and the faith you had in me along with your enthusiasm you have for our town. I truly cherished our conversations.
I honestly have enjoyed my time and service to the town, it was an absolute privilege to serve our community. The 15 years flew by in no time, which indicates it wasn’t work for me, but a passion. I was proud of my service and my votes which some may have disagreed with, but know it came from a good place with only the best intentions for the greater good and I have no regrets.
To the many elected officials, I served with over the years, it’s been an absolute pleasure working alongside each and every one of you. We may not have always agreed, but we always had the best interest of our constituents and community in mind and without fail we kept it professional. I don’t think there was a meeting that I didn’t learn something new from each of you.
I wish the best to the newly elected Board of Ed and Town Council; may all your deliberation be met with principle, integrity, and best intentions for our students and town.
Lastly, but most importantly, I’d like to thank my family who managed without me many days and nights with our busy meeting schedule, committees, union negotiations, phone calls at home – and they even had to try and stay quiet during the many virtual meetings over the years. I couldn’t have served without your unwavering support.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you West Hartford! I’m hoping you haven’t heard the last of me. Only time will tell!
Mark Zydanowicz

Minority Leader
