A man was arrested Thursday after police discovered that his story about being carjacked at gunpoint was false, and that the man had instead crashed the vehicle into the porch of a West Hartford home and then fled the scene.

West Hartford Police said that William Ferris, 50, called police just after 12:30 p.m. on Thursday to report that while taking out the trash he had been approached by an armed Jamaican man who demanded the keys to his Acura.

Police discovered the vehicle parked at the Citgo gas station at 1137 New Britain Ave, and reviewed surveillance footage from the station.

Police said that after reviewing the video, they arrested Ferris for filing a false report about being carjacked.

According to police, they learned that Ferris did not have a drivers license, and had crashed the Acura into a pillar of the front porch of a residence at 53-55 Mayflower St., and then fled the scene. He parked the vehicle at the gas station, police said, and called in the false report while walking to 163 Elmhurst St.

Ferris was charged with filing a false incident report, giving false statement, tampering with evidence, interfering, reckless endangerment, and several moving violations, police said.

The Mayflower Street home sustained damage to the lawn and had a broken porch pillar.
