Following last year’s sold-out run of You’re a Monster, Matthew Dicks, acclaimed author, storyteller, and performer Matthew Dicks is back with an all-new solo show, Shovel. The show, directed by David Golder, will take the stage at TheaterWorks Hartford on Sunday, May 4, and Monday, May 5, at 7 p.m.

In this latest production, Dicks takes audiences on a hilarious and deeply personal journey through his lifelong urge to pick a fight, his ongoing battle to suppress that impulse, and a surprisingly intense showdown over a high-quality beach shovel.

“I’m thrilled to be directing this production at TheaterWorks,” Golder said. “It’s funny, engaging, thought provoking. Our goal is to craft a story that stays with you long after the curtain falls. In a good way.”

For those unfamiliar with Dicks’ work, he is a bestselling author, longtime elementary school teacher, and nationally celebrated storyteller. His stories have captivated audiences on The Moth Radio Hour, PBS’s Stories From the Stage, and beyond.

A former West Hartford Teacher of the Year and a finalist for Connecticut Teacher of the Year, Dicks brings a unique perspective to his storytelling, drawing from both his personal experiences and his decades in the classroom.

“I’m honored to be returning to TheaterWorks with this new show,” Dicks said. “It’s always fun to make people laugh while exposing the parts of you that most people prefer to keep hidden.”

Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to his work, Shovel promises to be an unforgettable evening of laughter, introspection, and, of course, a battle over a shovel.
