Milagros Acosta of West Hartford was honored last week at a ceremony at the Connecticut State Capitol after being named the Peruvian Citizen of the Year of the foreign Peruvian community.
Acosta is one of just 10 people worldwide, and the only person in Connecticut, to receive the honor.
The ceremony was hosted by then-state Rep. Edwin Vargas and the Consulate General of Peru, Elvis Tuesta.
West Hartford Town Council member Leon Davidoff read an official statement on behalf of Mayor Shari Cantor and the Council. State Rep. Kate Farrar of West Hartford read a citation on behalf of the Connecticut General Assembly. Town Council member Deb Polun and other local residents, friends, and family, were also in attendance.
Acosta, who is a member of the staff of the Connecticut House of Representatives, was recognized “for many years of work supporting the Peruvian community all over the state through social service, humanitarian support, and permanent assistance to the Peruvian community of our state,” an announcement from the General Assembly states.
