Children from the Montessori School of Greater Hartford once again helped out West Hartford’s Department of Social Services, “adopting” two families for the holidays and also donating dozens of gift cards to help others in need.

West Hartford resident Rebecca London, whose son, Atticus, attends Montessori School of Greater Hartford, said that her own family had “adopted” a family through Social Services for many years, but last year she helped get the entire school community involved in all aspects of raising funds – which included holding the inaugural jog-o-thon – and delivering holiday gifts to Town Hall.

The second annual event was also a great success.

“They did everything from planning the run and getting sponsorships to deciding what to purchase for families, making the wrapping paper and walking to Town Hall to deliver the gifts,” London said. “This year they ran 1,116 laps of their field, totaling 223 miles!”

This week they walked from the school, which is located on the campus of the American School for the Deaf in West Hartford, to Town Hall.

The students raised enough money this year – a total of about $8,000 – to provide for all of the holiday needs and wishes of two West Hartford families.

“Additionally, they provided 38 one hundred dollar gift cards to families at Whiting Lane and Morley school to assist with food needs,” London said.

“The day of the jog-o-thon and the day of the delivery West Hartford police officers, firefighters and social workers were on hand to support the children,” London said. “Such a lovely and meaningful way for these children to give back to their community.”
