History was made Saturday at Palmer Field in Middletown as the Northwest Catholic Indians became the lowest seed ever to win a CIAC baseball tournament title.
NWC, seeded no. 27, won the tournament with a 5-1 victory over the no. 4 seed Morgan School of Clinton. The Indians ended the season with a 14-11 record. According to the Hartford Courant, the victory was Northwest’s second championship win in four appearances and first since 2010.
Freshman pitcher and West Hartford resident Luke Fox earned the win, giving up just one run on four hits with five strike-outs and two walks, according to the Courant. He was relieved by junior Justin Gallichio of Burlington, who retired the final four batters.
The Indians scored all five runs on four hits in the third inning, and heading into the fourth it was 5-0 Northwest Catholic. Morgan nearly scored one in the bottom of the third, but third baseman Aaron Renker of West Hartford made a diving catch of a grounder with runners on first and second for the third out.
Morgan’s lone run came in the sixth inning.
