Twelve Renbrook students in grades 6 through 8 participated in the Hartford Chapter MATHCOUNTS competition on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2023. There were 17 teams and 131 individuals from area public and private schools who competed in the event.
MATHCOUNTS is a nationwide enrichment, club, and competition program specifically for U.S. middle school math students. According to MATHCOUNTS: “Our approach is simple. We make learning math fun. We believe middle school is a critical juncture when a love of math must be encouraged, and a fear of math must be overcome. Our programs build problem-solving skills and positive attitudes about math, so students embrace challenges and expand their academic and career opportunities in the future.”
The competing Renbrook team consisted of four eighth grade students, including Ben Riley, Henry Hazelton, Linnea Knox, and Hridaan Mehta. The team ranked No. 7 overall. In the individual competition, Hridaan Mehta ranked No. 4 out of 131 students. He will be moving on to the state competition on March 11.
Other students who participated include Oliver Hochman (8), Sahasra Reddy (8), Aahna Shah (8), Cale Strober (8), Balian Buttimer (7), Kingstan Scannell (7), Joonha Hong (6), and Felix Knox (6).
Marianne Michailow, Renbrook MATHCOUNTS coach, said, “It was great to have the competition back in person, and Renbrook students did not disappoint! Our future looks bright! Congratulations to all our Mathletes!” Michailow has been coaching MATHCOUNTS at Renbrook School for 25 years.
