Sedgwick Middle School Holds Turkey Bowl XVI and Turkey Trot

West Hartford’s Sedgwick Middle School held its annual Turkey Bowl and Turkey Trot on Monday, Nov. 3, 2025.

Sedgwick Middle School’s annual Turkey Bowl and Turkey Trot returned was held on Monday, Nov. 3, and featured a surprising result in the football game and a not-so-surprising outpouring of generosity to support families in the community.
Originally planned for Halloween, the event was postponed due to weather. On Monday, Sedgwick had a modified schedule, and then at 1 p.m. the whole school, joined by family members and friends, made their way outside for Turkey Bowl XVI (16) – an event which pits co-ed teams of teachers and eighth graders against each other in a rousing game of flag football, with a DJ keeping the energy flowing.

The teachers came into Turkey Bowl XVI with a 13-2 all time record. This year, however, the eighth grade students won the back-and-forth game 70-63, the win coming on a buzzer-beating touchdown by eighth-grader Will King.
Following the game, all students made their way over to the starting gate for the fourth annual Turkey Trot – a one-mile fun run. Eighth graders Evan Watson – winner of last year’s race – and Brady Gill were the first to complete the mile in a time of 5:24.

Participants had the option to donate money to participate in the event. However, everyone was welcome to run, whether they donated or not. According to organizer and physical education and health teacher Jared Leghorn, the event raised $2,400 which will go right back out to Sedgwick community members who can use a little extra support during the holiday season – which at this point in time is more than ever, he said.
Students were dismissed at 2:50 p.m. just like any other school day. “It was a perfect afternoon and a great day to be a Sedgwick Wildcat,” Leghorn said.
