A Flood Watch is in effect for Sunday evening through late Monday with periods of heavy rain and possible flooding in our area.

Here are some reminders on how to prepare and prevent flooding:

  • Make sure down spouts on your home are clear and water is directed away from the foundation.
  • Rake debris away from storm drains.
  • Secure loose items that are in your yard.
  • Keep valuables on high shelves when storing materials in basements or in areas that are prone to flooding. Do this prior to the storm.
  • Stay out of basements when they become flooded.
  • Never drive into standing water or go around road-closure signs.
  • Walking or playing in flood waters is dangerous. The water can be contaminated with sewage and sewer covers can become displaced creating a drowning hazard.
  • Report flooding drains and streets as soon as possible. Call 860-523-5203.
  • Make sure you are prepared in case you lose power.
  • Stay off bridges over fast-moving water.
  • Make sure you are signed up for West Hartford’s West Hartford’s Community Advisory Notification System so we can reach you in times of emergency.

More information on preparedness can be obtained at: www.ready.gov/floods.
