The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) recently announced its third annual Embracing Our Environment event series set to kick off Oct. 30. The program aims to facilitate community engagement by integrating the natural world with the arts.

Supported by an endowment from the NEH Humanities and Arts Fund, “Embracing Our Environment” provides USJ students, faculty and staff with an opportunity to participate in an educational experience unlike any other. The first event, an EXOskeleton Eatery, will be a “bug bistro” featuring insect-themed snacks hosted by Dr. Kirsten Martin and held from 3 p.m. to 4:50 p.m. in McDonough Hall.

Dr. Martin, Associate Professor of Biology, will also be representing the University’s new B.S. Environmental Science degree program. The curriculum offers a bridge between environment and policy management by educating students through hands-on instruction and community involvement. Immersion in the program allows students to jump-start their careers in a job market the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates will grow 5% by 2031. Dr. Martin sees great potential in the program’s capabilities and continues to advocate for student enrollment.

“The launch of the new Environmental Science program celebrates the many ongoing projects and partnerships with local and regional environmental organizations,” said Dr. Martin. “Coursework is centered around experiential learning, to give students real-world experience and the satisfaction of helping their local community.”
