Looking for free tax help you can trust? Need ideas to help you save for the future? Come to the Hartford Public Library’s Downtown branch this Saturday, Feb. 24, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for no-appointment tax filing support.
At VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) sites throughout Greater Hartford and Windham Counties, IRS-certified volunteers are working one-on-one with taxpayers with incomes up to $54,000 to prepare and electronically file their state and federal income tax forms at no charge.
Walk-in tax filers are welcome during this Saturday’s Dollars & Sense Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hartford Public Library Downtown, 500 Main St., Hartford. To receive tax support, filers must bring a valid ID, social security cards, wage and earning statements, interest and dividend statements, a copy of last year’s federal and state returns, and proof of bank account routing numbers for direct deposit of refunds. Get a full list of documents to bring at https://www.irs.gov/
Tax filers will have the opportunity to learn about other financial resources available in the area. Volunteers ensure that filers claim their proper tax credits and refunds.
Can’t get your taxes done this Saturday? To schedule an appointment at one of more than 20 VITA sites in the region now until April 17, visit www.211.org and click on “Tax Help” or call 2-1-1 and press 3 and then 6. VITA sites are located in Hartford, East Hartford, Enfield, Manchester, Middletown, New Britain, Vernon, West Hartford, Windsor Locks, and the Windham region.
Individuals and families with household incomes up to $66,000 in 2017 can file for free on their own and obtain online support at any time using MyFreeTaxes.com.
VITA and MyFreeTaxes are offered by The Village for Families & Children and United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut to help working families become financially secure. Free tax preparation is one way for hard-working families to keep more money in their wallets.
Last year, 12,378 tax filers in central and northeastern Connecticut received $27,823,715 in refunds and credits thanks to the VITA program and MyFreeTaxes.com – money coming right back into our community.
