Two students from West Hartford, who attend Watkinson School, will have their pieces included in the upcoming Judy Dworin Performance Project.

On Thursday, Sept. 20, Watkinson’s Creative Arts Program (CAP) seminar students went to the Hartford Public Library to see a dress rehearsal of (US), a new site-specific performance piece by the Judy Dworin Performance Project (JDPP).

The JDPP company workshopped a version of this piece last winter at Watkinson in a production called Beacon, exploring the themes of inclusiveness, diversity, and free speech through movement, music, and writing. Pieces by two West Hartford students, Remie Hochman (’19) and Charles Sinche (’21), from Beacon were selected to be included in the professional production of (US).

In the audience talkback after the dress rehearsal, Artistic and Executive Director of JDPP Judy Dworin and the company thanked the students for the exploratory work they had done and the writing they contributed.

A description of (US) from the JDPP website:

Doors not Walls. Leaving, Arriving, Rediscovering (us). (US) is a timely and provocative exploration of the tensions and world views in public dialog about our country’s foundational tenets of inclusiveness, diversity, and free speech. Through dance, visual imagery and a layered sound score, (US) examines closed versus open spaces, uniformity versus individualism, and oppression versus sanctuary. (US) probes, questions and ultimately affirms what it is and can be to live in America and what freedom truly means.

Performances of (US) at the Hartford Public Library will premiere on Friday, Oct. 12, 2018, at 6 p.m. There will be additional performances at 8 p.m. and on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 6 p.m.
