The West Hartford Human Rights Commission announced it will hold its annual event to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights in West Hartford Town Hall on Jan. 17.

On Saturday, Dec. 10, 1948, a United Nations committee headed by Eleanor Roosevelt composed a document declaring the rights that everyone in the world should have: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

WHHRC Chairman Esam Boraey said that the declaration will be read aloud by residents from around West Hartford representing many of the nationalities that make our town so diverse and special. In addition, residents will stage performances to inspire and entertain.

The event on Wednesday, Jan. 17 begins at 5:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Town Hall at 50 South Main Street. The public is invited to attend. WHCI will livestream the celebration.

The West Hartford Human Rights Commission meets on the first Wednesday of the month. The commission’s board members, in addition to Chairman Boraey, include Secretary Winnie Tantraporn, Treasurer Eric Schoenberg, Kristyn Rosen-Jacobs, Mark Linabury, and Cara Paiuk. Pramod Pradhan serves as facilitator.

Currently the commission has three vacancies and encourages residents to contact Town Hall to inquire about appointments to join this group, which fosters mutual understanding and respect among people, and encourages equality of treatment of all people, regardless of race, color, religious creed, sex, sexual orientation, civil union status, gender identity or expression, marital status, familial status, genetic information, age, economic status, lawful source of income, national origin or ancestry, or present or past history of physical, mental, intellectual or learning disability including, but not limited to blindness.
