In addition to its neighborhood elementary schools, West Hartford, the district also has two magnet schools which augment the standard curriculum with an inquiry-based learning approach that families might want to consider.
Open houses for both Charter Oak International Academy and Smith STEM School will be held at the schools this month.
Charter Oak will welcome families to an open house on Wednesday, Feb. 4, beginning at 6:30 p.m., while Smith STEM’s open house is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 12, at 6:30 p.m.
At both open houses, families will be able to meet school staff and families, tour the building, and learn more about the process of applying to West Hartford’s magnet schools. Families will be able to ask questions and learn more about Charter Oak’s International Baccalaureate Program and Smith STEM School’s science, technology, engineering, and math programming.

This is a great opportunity to see the school and learn more about what makes each school unique.
More information about the programs, as well as testimonials from current and former families, can be found here.
In addition, more information is available on the magnet school webpage on the West Hartford Public Schools website.
Applications are due by 4 p.m. on March 6, and lottery results will be provided on March 26, with response required by April 9. Both schools will create a waiting list, with that list reviewed from late June through mid-August.
