A West Hartford man is in very serious condition at St. Francis Hospital Tuesday with injuries sustained in a single vehicle crash that occurred on Sunset Farm Road early Tuesday, West Hartford Police Capt. Jeff Rose said.

Police received a call to respond to the area of 29 Sunset Farm Rd. at 3:26 a.m., Rose said, after someone heard a loud noise and observed a fire hydrant that had been knocked over and was spewing water.

Police said that Charles Narwold, 28, of West Hartford, was the sole occupant of a 2013 Ford C-Max that was traveling on Sunset Farm toward Farmington Avenue. His vehicle left the roadway and hit the hydrant as well as a tree on the right shoulder.

Narwold was unresponsive and had to be extricated from the vehicle by first responders. He was transported to St. Francis Hospital with very serious injuries, police said.

The vehicle was totaled in the incident, and both the hydrant and the tree were also damaged.

Rose said that West Hartford Police’s accident reconstruction team is still on the scene and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
