West Hartford Native and Soap Opera Star Has Died

Joseph Mascolo, who was born in West Hartford passed away Thursday at the age of 87.

Veteran actor Joseph Mascolo died Thursday of complications from Alzheimer’s Disease, People Magazine reported.
Mascolo, who was born in West Hartford on March 13, 1929. He once lived on Ravenwood Road and Norwood Road, and graduated from Hall High School.

During his long acting career, Mascolo was best known for playing the role of the evil Stefano DiMera on the NBC soap opera “Days of Our Lives.”
He had an open-ended contract to play the villainous character, which according to NBC Connecticut Mascolo originated in 1982. The character of Stefano DiMera was killed off and returned several times on the show.
Mascolo had roles in many other TV shows and mini-series including General Hosptial, Bronk, Santa Barbara, and The Gangster Chronicles.
According to his IMDb page, Mascolo was the son of Italian immigrants Anna (DeTuccio) and Peter Mascolo. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Schultz-Mascolo, his son Peter, his step-daughter Laura, his sister Marie and her husband Ronald LaVoie, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
