A 27-year old Hartford man who fled an attempted traffic stop by West Hartford Police on Monday faces a variety of charges after his attempted escape ended in a motor vehicle crash involving injuries.
According to Capt. Aaron Vafiades, officers attempted to stop a motor vehicle in the area of Kane Street on Monday, Nov. 17, at approximately 5:23 p.m., after observing multiple violations.
Vafiades said the driver got onto I-84 westbound and officers attempted a motor vehicle stop just east of Exit 43, but the driver fled at a high rate of speed and exited the highway. Officers did not pursue, but were able to observe the vehicle in various areas of West Hartford and were able to successfully deploy a tire deflation device.
The vehicle ultimately came to a stop after being involved in a motor vehicle crash in the area of Kane Street and Prospect Avenue at approximately 5:29 p.m., Vafiades said.
Police arrested the driver, Julio E. Colon, 27, of Hartford, who was transported to Andrea hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
The vehicle that he struck was occupied by juveniles, and according to Vafiades they were transported to the hospital for evaluation.
Colon has been charged with misuse of plates, illegal tints, interfering with police, evading responsibility, engaging police in pursuit, second-degree reckless endangerment, reckless driving, no license, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, no insurance, failure to drive in the proper lane, and failure to drive right.
He was held on $75,000 bond and scheduled to appear in Hartford Superior Court on Tuesday.
