West Hartford prepares for August 13 Primary and Early Voting

The Aug. 13, 2024 primary applies to Republican candidates for U.S. Senate and Democrats who live in a small segment of West Hartford that is in the 15th State House District.

In West Hartford, the primaries for Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate and Democratic candidates for the 15th Assembly District of the Connecticut General Assembly will be held on Aug. 13, 2024. All voting locations will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

  • All registered Republican voters in West Hartford can vote in the primary for U.S. Senate.
  • District 1-1 (King Philip Middle School) is the only polling place with a Democratic and Republican Primary. At all other polling locations, there is only a Republican primary.
  • Voters not registered with a party cannot vote in primaries in Connecticut.

Starting this year, Connecticut allows residents to vote in person before the election. Early voting will be available from Aug. 5 to Aug. 11 at one location: the Town Hall Auditorium, 50 South Main Street. Please use the main entrance of the Town Hall.

When you arrive for early voting, you will check in and be verified as an eligible voter. You will then receive your ballot with an envelope. You will complete your ballot at a privacy booth and seal it in the approved envelope. Before you leave, you will place the sealed envelope in the secure receptacle as instructed by the election officials. Ballots will remain unopened until Primary Day, Aug. 13.

On Primary Day, Aug. 13, voters (who have not already voted early) should go to their regular polling location. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. To check your voter registration and polling location, visit the Secretary of the State’s look-up or call the West Hartford Registrars of Voters at 860-561-7450.

Connecticut law allows voters to receive an absentee ballot if they cannot appear at their assigned polling place on election day because of active service in the military, absence from the town, illness, religious tenets forbidding secular activity on the day of the election, duties as an election official at a polling place other than your own during all of the hours of voting, or physical disability.

To request an absentee ballot for the Aug. 13 primary:

  • First, obtain an absentee ballot application online, in person, or by mail. A Connecticut-issued DMV ID is required for online applications. Then, return the completed application to the Town Clerk’s Office (Room 313, Town Hall). The voter will then receive an absentee ballot.
  • Next, cast your vote using the absentee ballot.
  • Lastly, return the ballot to the Town Clerk’s Office by 8 p.m. on Aug. 13, 2024, by USPS mail, in person, or deposit it into the secure drop boxes located at Town Hall and the Faxon Branch Library, 1073 New Britain Ave.
