West Hartford Public Works Announces Spring Schedule, Yard Waste Collection Services

Bi-weekly spring yard waste collection will begin the week of April 13, 2026, with collection on the same day as bi-weekly recycling pick-up, and Saturday hours return April 11 at the Yard Waste and Recycling Center.

Curbside Yard Waste Collection
The Department of Public Works will commence its seasonal curbside yard waste collection. Yard waste collection follows the same schedule as the bi-weekly residential recycling program. The services will begin the week of April 13 for A-week recycling and the week of April 20 for B-week recycling. The program will run through the end of October.
Biodegradable bags and/or the brown yard waste cart must be placed at the curb by 6 a.m. to ensure pickup. Please do NOT place bags or carts out overnight before collection day.

Acceptable Material
- Yard trimmings, leaves, dead plant matter, and thatch.
- Pine needles, pine cones, acorns.
- Twigs, flowers, fruits, and vegetables (from the household garden).
Acceptable Presentation
- 30-gallon biodegradable brown bags.
- Bundled branches and brush up to 4 inches in diameter and up to 4 feet in length are accepted ONLY if bundled with organic twine.
- 95-gallon brown barrels.

Yard Waste and Recycling Center
Residents may also dispose of yard waste at the Town’s Recycling Center, located at 25 Brixton St. The Center is open year-round for residents only. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday hours will resume starting April 11, 2026, 7 a.m. to noon. Saturday hours will be in effect through mid-December.
An annual permit is required to access the Recycling Center. Residents may apply for a permit online. Applications will be processed within 2 business days, and permits will be mailed to residents via the U.S. Postal Service. For those who do not wish to transact online, residents may purchase permits at the Public Works office, Tuesday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The following services are available at the Recycling Center:
- Free compost and wood chips, while supplies last (self-service pick up)
- Electronics recycling: TVs, computers, cell phones
- Textile recycling: linens, clothes, shoes, curtains
- Yard Waste disposal of brush and leaves in paper bags or loose
- Dirt, concrete, rocks, stones (remove metal)
- Mattress and box spring recycling
- Household recyclables: plastics, glass, cardboard, boxboard, paper, and cans
- Disposal of paint, metal, and mercury thermostats
