West Hartford Resident Receives Fulbright U.S. Scholar award

Jacob Werblow, a professor at Central Connecticut State University, has receive a prestigious Fulbright U.S. Scholar award.

West Hartford resident Jacob Werblow, a tenured professor of curriculm and instruction in the School of Education at Central Connecticut State University, has received a 2025 Fulbright U.S. Scholar award from the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, and is spending the semester in Malaga, Spain.

Werblow, who has a Ph.D. in educational leadership from the University of Oregon, is currently co-teaching and conducting research at the at the Universidad de Málaga, according to the announcement from CCSU. “Werblow will co-teach in the Máster de Políticas y Prácticas de Innovación Educative Programme with Professora Carmen Rodríguez Martínez and will assist on the national research project Nuevas políticas educativas de equidad: Desafíos en la profesión docente, el currículo y la estratificación,” the announcement states.

“Having the opportunity to serve as a U.S. Fulbright Scholar at the Universidad de Málaga is not only a unique opportunity to collaborate with leading scholars in the field and to co-teach graduate students, but it also provides my family and me a life-changing cross-cultural, bilingual experience,” Werblow said.

He has been joined in Spain by his wife, Kristen, and their three daughters. Jade, Stella, and Lillian, who are otherwise West Hartford Public Schools students, are currently “doing their best to make it through the spring semester in the public schools here in Malaga, Spain. Every day is an adventure!” he told We-Ha.com.

“The School of Education is happy to support Dr. Werblow as he begins his work as a Fulbright Scholar,” Dr. Paula Talty, interim dean of the School of Education at Central, said in the announcement. “Dr. Werblow’s research interests and this opportunity for him to collaborate with international partners will enrich his work here at the university upon his return. I am confident that Dr. Werblow will form partnerships and engage in innovative work that will eventually impact the entire Central community.”

Werblow, who is also an affiliate faculty member with the UConn and serves as the associate director of the Center for Teaching Critical Thinking and Creativity at San Diego State University, has co-published a series of multilingual children’s books, according to his biography on the CCSU website. He is also an advisor to the Connecticut Center for Nonviolence and co-founder of Hoops for Homeless in New Britain.

This is Werblow’s second opportunity as a U.S. Fulbright Scholar, having spent 2019-2020 in Kyoto, Japan. He has received multiple awards for teaching and research, is a Harber Fellow of Education and Entrepreneurship at Wesleyan University, and his work has been published extensively.

According to the announcement of the award: “Since 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 400,000 students, scholars, teachers, artists, and professionals of all backgrounds with the opportunity to study, teach, and conduct research abroad. Notable Fulbrighters include 62 Nobel Laureates, 90 Pulitzer Prize winners, 82 MacArthur Fellows, 41 heads of state or government, and thousands of leaders across the private, public, and non-profit sectors. The Institute of International Education implements the Fulbright U.S. Student and U.S. Scholar Programs on behalf of the U.S. Department of State.”
