Several of West Hartford’s roads are undergoing complete reconstruction in 2020, while others will be milled and repaved.

Road construction season has started, and a number of West Hartford streets are scheduled for complete reconstruction that includes installation of granite curbing and concrete driveway aprons, catch basin replacement, selective concrete sidewalk replacement, and repaving, while others will be milled and repaved.

Reconstruction work began several weeks ago, and according to Town Engineer Duane Martin, during the 2020 construction season, the town plans to reconstruct the following roadways, in the order listed below. Work on some of the roadways will not begin until the summer.

  • Ringgold Street (Park Road to Gillette Street)
  • Middlefield Drive
  • Price Boulevard (St. Augustine Street to Flatbush Avenue)
  • Ledyard Road (Albany Avenue to Westwood Road)
  • Princeton Street

In addition, other roadways are scheduled for repaving – which includes milling but not complete reconstruction. There will be multiple rounds of repaving. The first round of milling and paving began earlier this month, involving the following roadways:

  • Bretton Road
  • Brighton Road
  • Fern Street (Trout Brook Drive to Prospect Avenue)
  • Mountain View Drive
  • North Main Street (Albany Ave to Pioneer Drive – work completed during the night)
  • Rosedale Road (final surface)
  • Sunny Slope Drive
  • Webster Hill Boulevard (South Main Street to Crestwood Road)
  • Westmoreland Drive

The work on North Main Street has been completed, other than final pavement markings, and work on Webster Hill Boulevard is among the projects currently underway.

Martin said that Webster Hill Boulevard was completely reconstructed about 15 years ago, but the pavement “didn’t last as long as we would have hoped.”

As part of the repaving of Webster Hill Boulevard, and after consultation with the Pedestrian and Bicycle Commission, bicycle lanes are being created on both sides of the roadway. In order to accommodate the lanes, on-street parking is being eliminated in front of the even-numbered residences (north and east side of the road) from South Main Street to Crestwood Road.

Paving of Bretton Road and Fern Street was supposed to be included in a later round, but Martin said they were able to move those projects up because school buildings are not in use.

Martin said milling and paving of the following roadways is tentatively scheduled to begin in June:

  • Boulevard (Farmington Avenue to Mountain Road)
  • Boulevard (Whiting Lane to Prospect Avenue)
  • Brookmoor Road
  • Cornerstone Drive
  • Deepwood Lane
  • Hyde Road
  • Peaslee Hill
  • Surrey Way
  • Tanager Drive
  • Waterside Lane
  • Westmont Road (upper loop)

Reconstruction of the North Main Street Bridge has been underway since late January, with traffic narrowing to one lane in each direction in the area of Linwood Road and Wynwood Road.
