West Hartford Student Wins Top Prize in Congressional Art Competition

Conard student Mya Concepcion was awarded first prize in the 34th Annual Congressional Art Competition, and has been awarded a large scholarship.

West Hartford Public Schools Visual Arts Department is proud to announce that Mya Concepcion, a Conard student was awarded First Prize in the 34th Annual Congressional Art Competition. To celebrate this honor she will receive a $12,000 scholarship to the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD),her work will be professionally framed and displayed in Washington D.C. in the Cannon Tunnel, and finally, she will receive two round trip plane tickets to the Washington, D.C. reception in June.
U.S. Rep. John Larson and Manchester Community College President Gena Glickman, were in attendance at a reception for the artists during the announcement of awardees. The event took place at the Dehn Gallery MCC in Manchester.
Ms. Brigid Kennedy is the Visual Arts educator at Conard who has nominated her students over the past fours years. It is worthy to note that from 2013-2016 several of her students have been honored:
2013 – First Place Jensun Yonjun, Digital Art
2014 – First Place – Becca Zeiger, Drawing
2015 – Honorable Mention – Jasmine Taylor, Photography
2016 – First Place – Mya Concepcion, Drawing
Visual Arts Supervisor Pam Murphy states,“Brigid is completely dedicated to highlighting her students and their achievements, growth and talent. It is advocacy for her students that clears their path to realize their highest potential.”
