Academics
National Merit Semifinalist: About 1.5 million juniors in some 22,000 high schools entered the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQY), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors. All-State scholars are chosen based on their GPA. Hartford Courant sports writers choose top players for various sports in the state based on positions and talent. All New England is based on placement in the New England Championship meet for individual sports such as cross country. All New England in team sports is voted in by all of the coaches once athletes receive All State status.
