On Thursday, April 23, 2015, the West Hartford Symphony Orchestra performed its annual Children’s Concert for the third graders of the West Hartford school system.
The 45-minute concert took place at Conard High School. The supervisor of Fine and Performing Arts, Andrew Mayo, introduced the orchestra and its music director Richard Chiarappa, asking the students to stand while the orchestra played the “Star Spangled Banner.”
As they entered the auditorium ninety students were randomly given tickets to go up to the stage 15 at a time and sit amongst the orchestra members.
This is considered a valuable concert for the school system because three weeks later the children choose what instrument they would like to learn to play during their elementary years.
As conductor Chiarappa said to the students, “Maybe someday some of you will be on this stage playing in the orchestra.”
The program included music from popular movies like “Star Wars” as well as classical pieces such as Grieg’s “In the Hall of the Mountain King” which the students had studied during school. The concert ended with popular music selections from the movie “Frozen.”
