The West Hartford Town Council has issued a Proclamation honoring the retired men’s’ club Old Guard at their meeting at Town Hall on Tuesday, May 14.
Incoming President John Keleher and most of the living past-presidents were present for the honor. The Proclamation was read by Mayor Shari Cantor and presented to Keleher.
The document recognized the contributions of the Old Guard to the community and to the education and fellowship of its members. It cited member contributions over $100,000 of food “worth” to local and regional food banks, delivery of Meals on Wheels, collecting for the Salvation Army, delivering over $10,000 to the West Hartford YMCA for camp scholarships, member work for Habitat for Humanity and Restore and providing guides at the UConn Health Center.
In his acceptance remarks, Keleher noted that “while I have only been in office for about four hours, I am honored to receive this recognition from the town of West Hartford. Unlike so many social organizations today, the Old Guard membership continues to grow, now over 200 strong and membership increased by over 10% in the past year. Our new members have come from retirees who worked and lived in the area as well as men who have moved into the community to be near their children and grandchildren here.”
Old Guard meetings are suspended for the summer but will resume on the Tuesday after Labor Day. Additional information can be found at on the website at ctoldguard.org.
