The West Hartford Waves completed their season on Saturday with a seventh-place team finish in their league’s “A” championship swim meet, held at Bulkeley High School in Hartford.

Nine-year-olds Julia Seguro and Sam Peters led the Waves, each collecting a second-place finish. Julia was second in the 9-10 girls 50-yard butterfly (36.48 seconds), and Sam was second in the 9-10 boys 50-yard breaststroke (44.47).

The fastest six competitors in each event earned medals in the meet, which brought together the strongest swimmers from 12 teams in the Central Connecticut Winter Swim League. Julia and Sam also finished top-6 in their other event, the 100-yard freestyle. Sam was fifth for the 9-10 boys, touching in 1:14.04. Julia was sixth among 9-10 girls, finishing in 1:12.73.

Teammate Isabella Guajardo-Moore, 13, also had two medal-winning swims. She was fourth in the 13-14 girls 100 back (1:14.48) and sixth in the 100 free (1:04.36).

Other top Waves finishers were: Nick Hall, 9, fourth in 9-10 boys 50 back (41.71); Jeffry Rosborg, 9, fourth in 9-10 boys 50 breast (47.25); Cate Mancini, 10, sixth in 9-10 girls 50 back (39.54); and Eleanor Brown, 13, fourth in 13-14 girls 50 free (28.67).

Nearly 50 Waves swimmers qualified for the league’s season-ending “A” meet. The rest of the team swam Feb. 8 at Springfield JCC in the “B” Championship.

Five Waves swimmers won their events at B Champs, led by Abigail Mayuri, 13, who won both her swims. She touched first in the 13-14 girls 100 free (1:10.20) and 100 fly (1:34.25).

Other Waves individual winners at the B meet include: Sarah Jane Mielcarek, 8, in the girls 8&U 25 back (23.99); Ellie Parker, 12, 11-12 girls 50 fly (39.10); Will Tonkinson, 10, 9-10 boys 50 free (37.91); and Maya Barlow, 13, 13-14 girls 100 breast (1:32.70).

The championship meets came after a 4-3 dual meet season for the Waves, which started in November.

“When someone swims their best at the championship meet, it’s exciting for the whole team,” said Waves parent board president Missi Burke. “We can’t wait to see what these kids do next year.”
