With three individual and two relay victories, Joshua Parks, 11, led the West Hartford Waves swim team to a win over Glastonbury on Sunday, Dec. 14, at Cornerstone Aquatics Center.

The sixth-grader, who attends King Philip Middle School in West Hartford, won the 100-yard freestyle, 100 individual medley and 50-yard butterfly events in his age group. He was also part of the first-place 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay.

Joshua was backed by strong swims from his teammates. His sister, Jasmine Parks, 10, a fifth-grader at Morley Elementary, was one of four double-winners for the Waves. Jasmine touched first in both the 100 IM and 25-yard butterfly races for girls 9 and 10 years old.

Other swimmers with two first-place finishes were: Jane Harhay, 8, (25 free and 25 back); Will Tonkinson, 10, (100 free and 25 fly); and Ben McIlhoney, 8, (25 backstroke and 25 fly).

Ben, a third-grader at Webster Hill Elementary, achieved “A” championship qualifying times with his swims.

Overall, the Waves turned in more than 70 personal-best times in the meet.

“Everyone is dropping solid time,” said coach Aaron Norton. “It’s that time of the season.”

The West Hartford Waves compete in the Central Connecticut Winter Swim League. They swim dual meets against teams throughout the region, and end their season in February with both an “A” and “B” championship meet.
