It’s Throwback Thursday (#tbt), and time to take a look back into West Hartford’s past to either stir up some memories, reflect on how much things have changed, or both. And if you have no idea, we love the photo captions, too!

Last week we featured an image (at right and in larger size below) that is clearly a fire station and it was fairly easy to pinpoint the location, but the year it was taken was a mystery.

R. Farr started the early morning guessing (logged at 2:23 a.m.!) with, “east side of Bishop’s Corner, Albany Ave. across from Crown supermarket, mid-1950’s.”

Rick Liftig added, “A brand new fire station and a brand-new truck! Gotta be 1954,” and Connie Reder concurred with, “Right; at the corner of Albany Avenue and Starkel Road.”

On Facebook, Lisa Christensen Petersen also knew the location, but while she had a keen eye for detail, she went back a little too far with her estimation of the year, “I am having trouble with the year though. I see the Civil Defense logo on the truck. I think this might be the 1940s?”

The year was actually 1953, but it was in October, so it’s close enough to 1954/mid-1950’s! Thank you for your comments.

Now see if you can figure out this week’s mystery building!

This week’s Throwback image (at right and in larger size below) is a bit more generic, but history buffs may have ideas. Even if you have no idea, go ahead, take a wild guess!

  • This is a little tougher than a photo of a basketball that says “WHHS 11-12”. I see Joy’s byline today and guess that she has decided to up the ante!

My guess: a new house on West Hill Drive sometime in the 1920’s. It’s too small to be a mansion and it’s too fancy to be a farmhouse. The pole has a sign on it which makes me think new construction.
