Fuller Craft Museum is thrilled to announce its newest exhibition, “Amy Genser: Shifting,” which opened Feb. 5, 2022.

Connecticut artist Amy Genser, of West Hartford, works with paper and paint to explore her ongoing obsession with texture, pattern, and color. Using paper as pigment, she layers, cuts, rolls, and combines the humble material into vibrant tableaux that are inspired by the natural world – the flow of water, the shape of beehives, the organic irregularity of plants, and more.

For her site-specific installation at Fuller Craft Museum, Shifting, Genser explores the mutable beauty of the museum’s natural surroundings, the power of each season, and the beautiful transitions in between.

“Fuller Craft Museum is delighted to partner with Amy Genser on this exciting site-specific installation. Like most of our visitors, Amy was in awe of the museum’s natural setting when she first visited last year, and I’m thrilled she chose our unique location as inspiration for her magnificent exhibition. Museum-goers will enjoy an immersive experience that celebrates both the splendor of our surroundings and the material innovation of paper arts,” said Beth C. McLaughlin, artistic director and chief curator at Fuller Craft Museum.

Since opening her studio 20 years ago, Genser has had a vision of her work coming to life beyond the walls and becoming sculptural. Shifting is the result of this exploration. While visiting Fuller Craft Museum in the spring of 2021, she was struck by the beauty of the land and water hugging the museum. As a New Englander herself, she knew the seasonal transitions would be quite visible and stunning. Much like our institution is nestled in its environs, Genser tucks her work into the framework of the gallery within the museum, using her language of paper, paint, metal, and thread to create an installation that shows the strength of each season and the changes in between.

Genser’s love affair with paper began in a paper-making class at the Rhode Island School of Design, where she received a Masters’ degree in Graphic Design. Genser lives in West Hartford, CT with her husband and three sons, and spends her summers on the beach in Rhode Island. For more information about Genser, please visit amygenser.com.
