On Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, 2026, the children’s department at the West Hartford Public Library was filled with energy and purpose as elementary-aged volunteers gathered for the “Big Fill,” a key event supporting the library’s 9th Annual Kindness Project.

Dozens of young volunteers, including Ariana, Keegan, Kane, Vincent, Vera, Vadim, Catalina, Julian, Joe, Benjamin, and Souheil, arrived eager to help, accompanied by parents and grandmother. With help from moms, dads, grandma, and five teens from the Mayor’s Youth Council, the children sorted donated toiletries and hygiene items into 12 categories, carefully packing, taping, labeling, and stacking boxes for distribution.

The entire effort – from sorting to cleanup – was completed in just over an hour.

The event was part of “Planting Seeds of Kindness,” a PLTI community project led by West Hartford resident Helen Wang in collaboration with Carol Waxman, head of the library’s children’s department. Helen created the initiative to provide meaningful and accessible volunteer opportunities for elementary-aged children, inspired by her desire to help young kids experience the joy of helping others and to make it easier for families to participate in simple acts of kindness that help shape character.

The Kindness Project, now in its ninth year, collects essential items for local families in need. This year’s Big Fill demonstrated the powerful impact of youth volunteerism, as families, neighbors, and friends came together on Valentine’s Day to spread kindness throughout the community.
