Last Thursday, Gail Crockett was endorsed by the West Hartford Democratic town committee to become the town’s next Democratic Registrar of Voters. Crockett  said that she was honored to receive the committee’s nomination and unanimous vote. An experienced administrator and active in the community, her candidacy will focus on improving voter registration, increasing election participation and modernizing election administration.

Said Crockett, “So many fought hard for the right to vote, but too many now take voting for granted or don’t vote at all. That puts our democratic government at risk. As Registrar of Voters, my priority will always be the broadest possible voter participation for all our citizens. I am not prepared to accept the prevailing pattern of declining voter registration and declining voter turnout.

“We need to do more to reach out into the community, especially in our schools, and promote the importance of voting. I will work with the Secretary of the State, Connecticut’s top election official, and our town clerk to make it as easy as possible for eligible residents to become voters and cast their ballots. Using secure and reliable technology, we can make the whole election process more efficient, effective, accessible, informed, and responsive.”

Crockett is retiring after 15 years as director of External Relations and Senior executive assistant to the State Treasurer. She previously held a variety of senior administrative positions with responsibility for planning, systems management, constituent relations, and special projects. She is a graduate of Marymount College (B.A. in Political Science and Sociology) and the University of Connecticut School of Social Work (M.S.W. in Policy and Planning).

Crockett’s community service includes being on the Executive Board for the Boy Scouts of America Connecticut Rivers Council; parent leadership in the Girl Scouts; membership on the Board of the Pump House Gallery; and Sunday School teaching at The Universalist Church of West Hartford. In 2009, she was named “Woman of the Year” by the Connecticut Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Crockett lives on Plainfield Road and has made West Hartford her home for 37 years. She is the mother of two adult children, Jordan and Leigh, who both attended Norfeldt Elementary School, King Philip Middle School and Hall High School.
