A battle that went down to the last yard in a homecoming thriller Saturday had everything fans could ask for: big plays, momentum swings, and a finish that came down to the final point – literally. In front of an announced crowd of 35,883 fans at Rentschler Field, UConn battled back from a 20-point deficit to force overtime against Syracuse, only to fall 42-41 in heartbreaking fashion after a controversial two-point conversion secured the Orange’s victory.
UConn received the opening kickoff but was quickly forced to punt, giving Syracuse possession at its own 30-yard line. The Orange struck first five minutes into the contest when Amari Odom connected with Umari Hatcher for a 40-yard touchdown reception. However, UConn blocked the extra-point attempt to keep the deficit at six.

The Huskies responded with a touchdown of their own as Kalieb Osbourne found Cam Abshire for an eight-yard score. Jack O’Connor converted the extra point to give UConn a 7-6 lead. Both defenses settled in for the remainder of the first quarter, keeping the game within reach.
Syracuse regained control early in the second quarter when Odom connected with Noah Myers for a four-yard touchdown. Shay Barker added the extra point to put the Orange ahead 13-7.

Odom extended the lead with a six-yard rushing touchdown, pushing Syracuse ahead 20-7. The Orange added to its advantage after Keyshawn Johnson recovered a fumble, setting up a 41-yard touchdown reception by an Umari Hatcher on a pass from Odom. The score made it 27-7.
UConn answered before halftime, with Trey Cornist punching in a four-yard rushing touchdown to cut the deficit to 27-14.
Syracuse opened the second half with a lengthy drive that ended in a 31-yard touchdown reception by Daunte Bacheyie. The Orange appeared poised to pull away, but UConn refused to fold. Cyncir Bowers broke through for a 10-yard rushing touchdown, bringing the Huskies closer.

Renick Dorilas then intercepted a Syracuse pass to give UConn another opportunity, but the Huskies were unable to capitalize and turned the ball over on downs. The game was also interrupted by a concerning injury to Javon Brown, who was stretchered off the field.
UConn’s comeback continued in the fourth quarter. Just five seconds into the period, Osbourne connected with Xavier Watson for a seven-yard touchdown. After the Huskies’ defense forced another turnover on downs, Bowers broke loose for a spectacular 71-yard rushing touchdown, tying the game at 34-34.

Jayden Price added another interception for UConn, but the Huskies again failed to convert the takeaway into points. Syracuse had a chance to win in regulation, but Barker’s 44-yard field-goal attempt sailed wide, sending the contest into overtime.
Syracuse won the overtime coin toss and elected to play defense first. UConn capitalized as Osbourne connected with Cornist for a 25-yard touchdown, giving the Huskies the advantage.

The Orange answered when Odom found Hatcher for a 17-yard touchdown. Syracuse then went for the two-point conversion, with Odom carrying the ball into the end zone in a finish that sparked immediate debate. UConn supporters argued that Odom had been stopped short of the goal line, while Syracuse fans maintained he had crossed by inches.
The ruling stood, giving Syracuse the decisive points and ending a wild homecoming showdown in heartbreaking fashion for the Huskies after their remarkable comeback.

In a game that had the tens of thousands of fans on the edge of their seats, UConn came within inches of completing an unforgettable comeback. Down by 20 points, the Huskies refused to back down, clawing their way back into contention and forcing overtime in a homecoming thriller that had everything. But in the end, the difference between victory and defeat came down to a single conversion, as Syracuse escaped with a 42-41 win.
For UConn, the result was heartbreaking, but the fight displayed on its home field proved that the Huskies would not go quietly. In a game defined by resilience, determination and a finish that will be debated long after the final whistle, the Huskies left everything on the field – and came up just one point short.
