The West Hartford Dog Park Coalition’s first ‘Pop-Up Dog Park’ event was held Sunday in Kennedy Park.

West Hartford dogs enjoyed an off leash playdate with their pooch friends Sunday at the West Hartford Dog Park Coalition’s first Pop-Up Dog Park held at Kennedy Park.
The dog park remained open from 9 a.m. through noon, and Phil Karlin, one of the leaders of the West Hartford Dog Park Coalition, said that at its peak there were about 25-30 dogs running around. He estimated at least 40 dogs and their owners stopped by.
Dogs of all sizes and shapes ran around without leashes, and although the area was not fenced, owners were attentive and Karlin said there were no “lost” dogs.
The dog park was surprisingly quiet other than the jingling of collars and thundering of paws, with the only barks coming from a herding dog that wanted all of the others to pay attention. [Editor’s note: That herding dog was my bearded collie. She barks when she tries to herd the seagulls at the beach, too.]
“It was definitely a success,” Karlin said.
The next pop-up event will be held on Oct. 23, and details will be announced soon. A full schedule of monthly pop-up dog parks will be released shortly, Suzi Craig of the West Hartford Dog Park Coalition said.
