On Wednesday, April 22, 2020, the West Hartford-Bloomfield Health District Board of Directors unanimously approved the appointment of Ms. Aimee Krauss, RS MPH, as the district’s next director of health.

Krauss is only the second director in the history of the health district and the first woman to serve in this role.

The West Hartford-Bloomfield Health District is a regional health department serving the towns of West Hartford and Bloomfield. It provides full-time professional public health services to 84,539 residents in both towns, a combined 48.6 square miles. The District is governed by an eight-member Board appointed by the elected bodies of the member towns (five board members from West Hartford, and three from Bloomfield).

For the past five months, Krauss has been serving as acting director since the retirement of Steven Huleatt in November 2019.

“The board has been extremely impressed with Ms. Krauss’ performance as Acting Director and is confident that the district is in good hands under her leadership. She has approached her position with dedication, intelligence, and resolve,” said Matt Hart, health district board chair and West Hartford town manager.

“When we appointed Ms. Krauss as Acting Director, the Covid-19 pandemic wasn’t even on our horizon. Ms. Krauss has stepped up to address this challenge as well, working 24/7 with the incident command systems of both Bloomfield and West Hartford to lead our response to this public health crisis. She has been extraordinarily responsive, firm when needed, and willing to think creatively to resolve issues and problems,” said Hart.

Krauss joined the Health District in January, 2013, as assistant director. She is a member of the Connecticut Environmental Health Association and Connecticut Association of Directors of Health. She earned her Bachelor’s of Science degree with a major in recreation therapy and a minor in gerontology from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania in 2000 and her Master’s in Public Health from the University of Connecticut in 2007.

Prior to the Health District, she worked for the Uncas Health District as a Sanitarian and the Town of Durham as a Director of Health. Krauss lives in Southington with her husband and sons.
