Auditions for the 2022 production of Ballet Theatre Company’s ‘The Nutcracker’ will be held in West Hartford on Sept. 18.

Open auditions for Ballet Theatre Company’s (BTC) “The Nutcracker” will take place Sunday, September 18th, at BTC’s facility located at 20 Jefferson Ave, West Hartford.

Dancers ages 6+ are eligible to audition for a variety of roles in Stephanie Dattellas’ “The Nutcracker.” Dancers currently enrolled in The School of Ballet Theatre Company (SBTC) are asked to follow the times for their appropriate level, while dancers joining from other schools should follow the times for their age at the time of the audition.

All interested dancers and their families are strongly encouraged to review the Production Overview and full details at www.dancebtc.org/audition-the-nutcracker prior to the audition, and contact BTC’s Artistic Staff at [email protected] with any questions.

For complete audition and production details and registration, visit www.dancebtc.org/audition-the-nutcracker. Registration closes Sept. 16, 2022 and onsite registration will not be accepted.

The schedule for the audition is as follows:

  • 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. – SBTC’s Ballet I & II -OR – community dancers ages 8-9
  • 1:45-3:30 p.m. – SBTC’s Ballet III & IV -OR – community dancers ages 10-13
  • 4:15-5:15 p.m. – SBTC’s Ballet V & VI -OR – community dancers ages 14+

*Please note that dancers may be asked to stay longer or released earlier than the schedule predicts depending on the needs of the Artistic Staff.

BTC’s “The Nutcracker,” choreographed by Artistic Director, Stephanie Dattellas, will take place Nov. 26 and 27, 2022, with a total of four public performances, including one sensory-friendly performance, “A Sensory-Friendly Ballet.” The Sensory-Friendly Ballet ticket purchases will be open to the public for people of all ages. Local children’s advocacy agencies will also be offered tickets to this special sensory-friendly theater experience.

BTC is thrilled to return to the Bushnell’s Maxwell M. & Ruth R. Belding Theater with a refreshed version of Dattellas’ beloved holiday classic, featuring brand-new choreography and costuming for much of Act II. In an effort to address the lingering cultural appropriation in the 130-year-old ballet, Dattellas has reimagined a new, vibrant, and cheeky Act II featuring magical treat-foods that would wow a 19th-century young lady in a dreamscape and will delight modern audiences.

In addition to the excitement of mounting this updated and inspired version of Dattellas’ production, students involved in BTC’s “The Nutcracker” will also be offered the unique opportunity to work alongside BTC’s company of professional dancers throughout the rehearsal process, further elevating this experience for young dancers of all ages!
