The Bridge Family Center will be participating in National Depression Screening Day on Thursday, Oct. 6 by offering free depression screenings.

This mini mental-health checkup, which takes less than two minutes to complete, will be available from 10 a.m. through noon at the Bridge Counseling Center, 1021 Farmington Avenue, West Hartford. Counselors will be on hand to speak with individuals about the results and connect people to relevant resources. No appointments are necessary.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) an estimated 40 million adults in the United States suffer from anxiety or depression. The intent of National Depression Screening Day is to bring help and hope to those who suffer from depression. A number of different factors can often come into play with depression that can include a mix of environmental, genetic, psychological, and biological /biochemical components. Not everyone experiences depression in the same way, but it can affect anyone at any time. So, it is important to take that next step and seek out professional help and be screened if you or someone you care about feels they may be depressed. Depression is a highly treatable condition with many different options available, but a professional should be sought out to help determine the best course of action for every individual that is suffering from it.

The Bridge Family Center serves approximately 8,000 children, adults and families each year. In addition to its central office, counseling center, Family Resource Center and Teen Center in West Hartford, the Bridge also has counseling centers in Avon and Rockville and short term assessment and respite homes in and around Hartford County. The Mosaic Parenting Center is located in Hartford.
